Lawrie Stirling played for Barnsley rugby union club in the 1920s and early 1930s and then went on to play a major off-field role. He was elected club secretary in 1921 and held that position until 1946. Stirling was, alongside Ted Umbers, crucial in ensuring the club re-started after World War Two. After Lawrie Stirling resigned as secretary he continued to offer his knowledge and experience to his successors. In 1955 he took over from Ted Umbers as President, a position he held until 1968. After he stood down as President he continued his involvement with the club both as a spectator and a wise elder statesman. In December 1971 in recognition of his fifty years of service the club organised a Lawrie Stirling XV that played a Barnsley XV in a special Christmas holiday fixture.
Lawrie Stirling was a Life Member of Barnsley rugby union club.
