In early 1977  the Rotherham Advertiser published two short articles that revealed plans to form an amateur rugby league club in the town. It was hoped that the articles would be seen by local sportsmen who were interested in giving rugby league a try. If  there was a positive response to the article and potential players came forward then a rugby league club in Rotherham could become a possibility.

The first article had a disappointing response as only one person expressed interest and unfortunately he was offering to be involved as an administrator and not as a player. Despite the initial response that had suggested that there wasn't much interest in rugby league in Rotherham, a second article was published in the Rotherham Advertiser a few weeks later.

The second article received a much more positive response with several potential players expressing an interest in becoming involved. As a result of the increased interest, a meeting was arranged in order to discuss the possibility of forming the first ever Rotherham rugby league club.
