Puig Aubert  was born Aubert, Henry, Jean Puig, but when he signed for Carcassone as a teenager there were several players with the same surname at the club. According to contemporary sources, the credit for his name change should go to a local newspaper editor who printed his name as Puig Aubert in order to avoid confusion. The name stuck and he was known as Puig Aubert for the rest of his playing and coaching career.

Puig Aubert was only 167 centimetres tall and weighed 60 kilograms, a small man with an amazing range of skills. He played at full back for Carcassonne from 1944 until 1953. When he left Carcassonne he joined the Perpignan based club XIII Catalan.

Puig Aubert remained at XIII Catalan until 1957, he moved to Celtic de Paris for a season and then finally Castelnaudary before retiring in 1960. He was capped forty six times for France scoring 361 points over ten year International career. After his playing days were over he became a coach and then an International selector.
