On the 23rd of January 1943 at Headingley, the home of Leeds rugby league club, a rugby union game was organised by the Northern Command Sports Board between a Rugby League XV and a Rugby Union XV.

The fixture attracted 8,000 spectators and raised £470 for the Army charities. The Rugby League XV won the game by 18 points to 11.

The rugby league forwards struggled to adapt to rugby union rules, but their backs were too quick and skilful and when they were in possession their quick passing allowed them to dominate.
