In 1953 Yorkshire finished top of the Northern Group level on points with Lancashire and so a play-off took place to determine which County would proceed to the semi-finals. In the play-off game at Otley, Yorkshire scraped home by 14 points to 12. In the semi-final at Headingley’s Clarence Field ground Yorkshire had a fairly comfortable victory over Devon by 24 points to 3.

The final took place at Lidget Green, Bradford’s home ground, where Yorkshire beat the East Midlands by 11 points to 3.

The 1952/53 season saw the emergence of Jeff Butterfield, one of the outstanding English centres of his generation. Butterfield was playing for Cleckheaton when he made his County debut before moving to Northampton to further his England career.
